I was once talking about weight control with someone who had asked if I could help. They told me that they had listened to a CD supplied with McKenna’s book “I can make you thin” and had found it successful at first but were now back to their original weight. They thought that they had become “immune to hypnosis” as it was “no longer working” for them, and wanted help getting back on track to be able to absorb McKenna’s message.
I explained that the key to achieving long-term, permanent weight loss is to find the subconscious reason why you over eat and realise that you no longer need that reason in your life today. There are many subconscious reasons but I will not go in to them here. I explained that they were not “immune” to hypnosis, simply the suggestions given were not appropriate for this individual, the suggestions were dealing with the symptoms and not the cause.
The person who I was talking with said that they really didn’t want to find the cause, they just wanted to get back on track with the McKenna CD. I politely explained that if the CD “worked” then they would not be overweight and talking to me about weight loss.
This had no effect and I, again politely, explained that I would not be willing to take them on as a client because I did not believe it was ethical for me to help someone get focused on a method which did not work for them. I suggested, very politely and genuinely, that if they really wanted to bring about a positive change in their life, they should throw the book and CD in the bin.
The person thought for a minute and asked me if I knew of another hypnotherapist in the area that would help them focus on the CD again……..
Some people just don’t get it.
