Waking hypnosis is when no formal induction is used but the critical factor (common sense) of the conscious mind is bypassed. Most children's critical factors do not fully develop until they are between 6 and 9 years old. Parents, you can tell when your child's critical factor has appeared when your littl'un stops believing in Father Christmas and The Tooth Fairy! (Sorry to burst anyone's bubble!)
Yesterday tea time I cooked my kids each a cheese and ham omelette and served it with some cucumber, tomato and carrots (No2 son's favourite, he would have them for breakfast if he could) cut up small, with the omelette. Daughter no longer believes in Father Christmas, No1 son (4 yrs old) and No2 son (3 yrs old) still do. The conversation halfway through eating went like this:
No1 son, “I don't like tomatoes.”
Me, “Yes, you do.”
No2 son, “I don't like tomatoes.”
Me, “Yes, you do.”
No1 son, “I'm not eating my tomatoes.”
No 2 son, “Nor am I.”
Me, “Did you know that tomatoes are a secret ingredient in chocolate, tomatoes make the chocolate stay together in different shapes, like an Easter Egg. If you don't like tomatoes that means you don't like chocolate.”
10 second pause where No1 son thought about what I had just said.
No1 son, “I love tomatoes,” followed by a big fork-full of the the stuff put happily in to his mouth and chewed with enough drama to let me know that he was really enjoying them.
No2 son, “I do too,” again followed by a gleeful scoffing of all the veg on his plate.
Waking hypnosis at its finest!
