As deep as you want to. There are many levels of hypnosis, each with their own indications and significance as to what can be achieved at any specific level.
What determines the depth of the hypnosis? Two things, the client and the hypnotist or hypnotherapist. The only things that stops someone going in to a state of hypnosis is themselves and in the same way the depth of hypnosis is achieved by the clients willingness to allow themselves to achieve the various depths.
This is also guided by the hypnotherapist who knows the difference between the various levels of hypnosis i.e. there is no point in attempting any regression work if someone is in a light state and in the same way, direct suggestion is pretty useless when someone is in such a deep state they could have their teeth pulled out without feeling it.
I'll cover the different levels and the purpose of each level in individual posts.
