What if the issue is "deep rooted"?

I don't believe that there is such a thing as a “deep rooted” issue or problem. There is only a reluctance to identify the issue, a reluctance to admit the cause of the issue or a reluctance to let it go.

Sometimes people don't want to go back to memories of past events but until they do so, the “bad” memory will always be there in the background, usually affecting the present behaviour of the person. My approach is to help them find the cause, the “bad” memory or memories, make sense of them, then let them go so that they will no longer affect the present behaviour and I show people how to do this quickly. Let's not spend 30 sessions doing it, let's look it in the eye, make sense of it, so that it loses it's perceived power over the present and let's do this once and once only. I don't do the “let's talk about it every week for the next 3 years” routine, let's do it quick. If there is a reluctance on the part of the client to identify the real cause or issue, it can't be done.

Sometimes people don't want to admit that the cause of their present behaviour is the real cause. 19 times out of 20, when the real cause is brought to conscious awareness, it is usually trivial, people think “is that it, is that all it was”? On a very few occasions people look at me and say “it can't be that”. And off they go and the “problem” remains.

Sometimes the benefits of keeping hold of the “deep rooted” problem outweigh letting them go (secondary gains). It is possible that an extreme phobia or behaviour brings with it much attention, negative or positive, and some people are reluctant to become “normal” i.e. free from the phobia or behaviour, because all of a sudden the attention, good or bad, will not be there.

The more someone is willing to embrace the fact that all of the abilities to let go of any negative thought, feeling or emotion connected to the past are within them, right now, the more someone is willing to let go of any logical thoughts connected to the “issue”, if people knew why they acted the way they did logically they wouldn't need or want to see me, the quicker we can work together and the better the chance you have of achieving permanent results.

Be happy (live, love and laugh as well),

Dave.
