Hm-mm, I watched this and must admit to mixed feelings. Derren Brown is someone who I find incredibly entertaining, his “tricks” using misdirection, showmanship etc. mostly leave me amazed and gobsmacked but as a fan I felt pretty let down. There were no “whoa” moments for me, none.
Derren’s use of traditional hypnosis is obvious to spot, his use of Perception Without Awareness is brilliant especially when it isn’t PWA, it’s simply slight of hand or misdirection which causes the forums to be full of false claims of “I know how he did that..” quotes, which confirms his mastery of misdirection, but I didn’t see any of that in his latest show.
As a fan I felt let down. I didn’t go “Whoa”, how the hell…?” at any time. Other people at the original auditions for the “game show” are telling how there were a number of suggestibility tests and Matt passed all with flying colours, that’s Rule 1 for all my clients reading this, that was why he was “selected”.
It was pretty obvious from the moment Matt got out of the Taxi in the petrol station that he must have had an inkling of what was going on so as a fan I was pretty disappointed.
But, as a hypnotherapist who encourages everyone to break out of their comfort zones and live their lives their fullest, I loved it! One of my favourite sayings that my clients have heard loads of times is “yesterday’s history, tomorrows a mystery, enjoy today”.
Yes it was a cheesy ending, yes there was a lot of feelgood and emotion at the end and yes I genuinely believe that Derren meant every word when he said that it was his proudest moment. As a hypnotherapist with the same philosophy and beliefs, I loved it.
The show covered 30 days of Matt’s life where he broke out of his monotonous lifestyle, set some goals, and felt better about himself and the people that meant something to him as well as complete strangers. Fantastic.
Now, when it comes to psychological illusion and showmanship Mr Brown would muller me in a head to head. But, when it comes to helping people achieve their potential and become happier about themselves and life, I’d have a tenner on myself in a head to head with Derren.
If you felt inspired by his show or want to reach new personal goals of happiness and achievement, or if you know someone that you think could benefit, give me a call (01923 243 500). Stop being a “one day I’ll…” person and become a “today I’ll…” person.
Life isn’t a rehearsal, this moment right now, even as you read this, is your real life performance. Enjoy it. 01923 243 500.
Be happy (and you can be even without staged armed robberies and straight-jackets to help you on your journey)!
