Are you sitting comfortably? Dr. Keith, who writes for The Sun newspaper, says that “Antidepressants can help with so many medical problems that perhaps we should be thinking about putting them in tap water“.
I’m glad you were sitting down and hope that you didn’t fall off your chair after reading that. Sit comfortably again because he goes on to say that if you are given antideps by your GP or MD don’t think that “he’s prescribed you pills that are addictive (they aren’t)“. Thanks Dr. Keith. I was under the impression, falsely obviously, that some of the prescribed antidepressants are addictive and that some people get hooked on them.
Sit comfortably again. “Because the drugs do work. We’re not always sure why or how.” Great. I always believed the propaganda that said that drugs were rigorously tested before being unleashed on us mere mortals, I didn’t realise that a drug manufacturer simply said to the agency responsible for rubber stamping the production and distribution of these magic pills. “I’ve got this pill. I don’t know how the hell it does what it does, it just does. I’d like to manufacture it and sell it to doctors and medical professionals and agencies who then give it to people to consume.”
Antidepressants should be put in tap water – Dr. Keith
The idea that putting drugs in tap water, so that anyone of any age, any state of mental health, whether happy or sad, and any state of physical health, could benefit is pure lunacy. I could go on about this but I haven’t got time. I’m off to change my website so it says “Hypnosis works! I don’t know how or why it’s so effective, it just is!” If any regulatory bodies or the ASA ask what I’m on about I’ll just tell them that if a medical professional like Dr. Keith, who must surely be subject to more regulation, professional memberships and ethics that I ever will be (I’m not a doctor) can say it, so can I! Dr. Keith, you’ve just set back the “evidence based” and “if it can’t be explained it can’t work” science brigades about five years.
Oh, one more thing before I go. I noticed an article in another newspaper which reported that “Nearly 1000 GPs earning £200,000“. I’ve never thought about it before but do some GPs earn even more by prescribing loads of antideps or get money directly from the manufacturers to promote them? Hmmm, food for thought (rather than pills for thought).
Be happy (without whacking half a dozen Prozac in your morning char),
Dave Sabat.
